Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS)

The Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) allows you to claim a refund of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) that you pay on certain goods purchased in Australia. The TRS office is operated by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and is located on your left after clearing Australian Customs in the International Departures Lounge on the First Floor. TRS is open to all overseas visitors and Australian residents, except for operating air crew. To claim a refund you must:

  • spend $300 or more (including GST) from a single business with the same Australian business number (ABN). This could include several items on different invoices.
  • purchase goods no more than 60 days before departing Australia;
  • get a valid paper tax invoice in English with:
    • your name (and only your name) as it appears in your passport if the invoice is $1,000 or more
    • a description of the goods that allows us to match the goods to the invoice
    • the retailer's name, address and ABN (ACNs and ARNs not accepted)
    • the amount of GST or WET paid (or total price including GST)
    • the date of purchase
  • wear or carry the goods on board as hand luggage (unless they are liquids, gels or aerosols or oversized or bulky goods which the airline require to be checked in) and present them along with your tax invoice, passport and international boarding pass to the TRS facility;
  • have oversized and restricted goods inspected by ABF Client Services before check-in and take the stamped invoices to the TRS Facility on departure day
  • present passport, boarding pass, and original tax invoices at the TRS Facility.
  • have paid for the goods yourself; and
  • declare goods on return to Australia:
    • declare any goods for which a TRS claim was made.
    • declare them under Question 3 on the Incoming Passenger Card (IPC).
    • penalties apply for failing to declare items.
    • if TRS-refunded goods (plus other duty-free/overseas purchases) exceed the passenger concession allowance, GST/duty may be payable. Some exemptions apply (e.g., personal clothing, except furs).

To make sure you have enough time to make your TRS claim, you should complete your departure immigration clearance at least 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time of your flight.

  • Please visit ABF's TRS webpage to find out what you cannot claim, contact details and other general information.

Useful tip: To speed up the process, you can use the ABF mobile and web TRS application to lodge your claim. However, these apps do not process claims but can speed up your time at the TRS Facility. They store your details in a QR code, which can be scanned at some TRS locations. However, scanners may not always be available.

You must present this code, along with your purchased goods and original tax invoices, to the TRS facility at Darwin Airport on your departure from Australia. If you successfully enter your TRS Claim details using the apps, you will be able to use a dedicated queue at the TRS facility and processing your claim should be faster.

Water fountains

Drinking water is available from the water fountains located on the Ground Floor of the Terminal and in the upstairs domestic departures lounge.

Wifi

Passengers and guests at Darwin Airport are welcome to enjoy high speed internet at no cost, throughout most areas within the Airport. Look for our free wi-fi hotspot called DarwinAirport on your device when you enter the terminal. Remember, it's fast and it's free!
